Tutorial 8 of 8
Sort the references view by title
Beginner 3 min
Show your references A–Z or Z–A without changing the board, combine the order with filters, and know which order exports and the reference editor use.
A board keeps its references in the order you collected or arranged them. That order is worth keeping: it is the order of exports, the HTML sheet and the moodboard list. When you are looking for one reference among many, an alphabetical list is often faster. View order gives you that without touching the board.
Change the order
Open the References view. Next to the result count above the cards is View order with three choices:
- Board order: the order stored in the board (the default).
- Title A–Z: alphabetical by title.
- Title Z–A: reverse alphabetical.
Titles are compared the way a dictionary in your language would compare them. Upper and lower case count as the same letter, accented letters sort with their base letter (in German, "Äpfel" comes before "Banane"), and numbers are read as numbers, so "Issue 2" comes before "Issue 10". References with the same title keep their board order among themselves.
With the keyboard, Tab to View order and use the arrow keys. The cards are re-ordered at once and focus stays on the list.
Combine it with filters
The order applies to whatever the filters show. Type a word into Search references, pick a Section, Platform or Tag, or tick Favorites only: the matching references appear in the chosen order. Clear filters keeps the order you picked.
What stays in board order
The hint under the list says it: Changes the view only; exports keep board order. Everything you save or share uses the stored order:
- Editable JSON, Standalone HTML, Selection as JSON and Selection as HTML in Export…;
- the project file from Download project file;
- the moodboard and its card list.
The view order is not saved in the board either. It applies to this session and to every board you open while the workspace stays open.
To change the stored order itself, open a reference with Edit and use Move earlier or Move later. While the view is sorted by title, the card keeps its place in the list. The editor then tells you the new board position, for example "Board position 2 of 4." Switch back to Board order to see the result.
